Strength Properties of Low Moisture Content Southern Pine
نویسنده
چکیده
Contemporary engineering design practices in the United States require information on the strength of lumber for moisture contents as low as 4 percent. Efficient design of experimental studies on lumber properties at low moisture contents requires a better understanding of the basic mechanisms controlling moisture-property relationships. Studies were conducted on the effect of moisture content on strength and stiffness in tension and compression parallel and perpendicular to grain, and centerpoint bending. The test specimens were cut from commercially dried lumber and sorted into matched groups based on specific gravity. One group was saturated with water and four groups were equilibrated to 4, 8, 12, and 18 percent moisture content prior to testing. The results show that strength and stiffness properties are a function of both moisture content and density. Although properties generally increased with a decrease in mois ture content, tensile strength parallel and perpendicular to the grain reached a maxi mum at about 12 percent moisture content. Further drying caused significant loss in tensile strength. Empirical models are presented for predicting the effect of moisture content on tensile strength parallel and perpendicular to grain, bending, compression parallel and perpendicular to grain, and shear parallel to grain.

Pine Wood Modification by Heat Treatment in Air
Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) wood has low dimensional stability and durability. Heat treatment was made in an oven using hot air during 2 to 24 h and at 170-200 oC. A comparison was made against steam heat treatment. The equilibrium moisture content and the dimensional stability (ASE) in radial and tangential directions were evaluated at 35%, 65%, and 85% relative humidity. MOE, bending stren...
متن کاملEstimating Moisture Content of Tree-length Roundwood
The green weight of southern pine tree-length roundwood delivered to the pulp mill is generally known. However, for optimum mill efficiency it is desirable to know dry weight. The moisture content of tree-length pine logs is quite variable. The moisture content of pine tree-length logs increases significantly with increasing stem height. Moisture content also varies with tree age and geographic...

Harvest operations conducted under conditions of high soil moisture on a wet pine flat in South Carolina resulted in a high degree of soil surface disturbance. Less soil surface disturbance occurred when soil moisture content was lower. Soil strength varied by soil disturbance class in wet harvested locations and highly disturbed areas were associated with low soil strength and elevated levels ...

Composites based on high density polyethylene (HDPE), pine flour, and organic clay were made by melt compounding and then injection molding. The influence of clay on crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, water absorption, and thermal stability of HDPE/pine composites were investigated. The HDPE/pine composites containing exfoliated clay were made by a two-step melt compounding proced...
متن کاملA reassessment of the compressive strength properties of southern yellow pine bark
Samples of southern yellow pine outer bark and wood were tested in compression to determine values for modulus of elasticity, stress at proportional limit, and maximum crushing strength. Results reported here resolve inconsistencies in the compressive strength data previously reported by others for pine bark. Testing of solvent-treated bark blocks suggests that although extractives are present ...
